THRACE. Philippopolis. Commodus, 177-192. Assarion (Bronze, 20 mm, 5.58 g, 12 h), 177-180. [ΑΥΤ Κ]ΑΙ Λ ΑΥΡΗ ΚΟ[ΜΟΔΟC] Laurate, draped and cuirassed bust of Commodus to right, seen from behind. Rev. ΦΙΛΙΠΠΟΠΟΛΕΙTΩΝ Hill surmounted by statue of Hercules standing front, holding apples in his right hand and club in his left; beneath, temple with four columns and rounded pediment enclosing uncertain statue. RPC IV.1 online 9922. Varbanov, Philippopolis, XI.58.1.7-11. Very rare and with an impressive reverse type. Somewhat smoothed and the reverse struck slightly off center, otherwise, very fine.
